Hornbook Class by Linda Stolz of Erica Michaels Neddleart Designs

This adorable little hornbook is embellished with a bit of stitching on 40ct silk gauze, combined with little bits and pieces to create your own personal and one-of-a-kind miniature collage. (The reverse side of the hornbook is also a little 3" ruler!) Whether you are a beginner or experienced with gauze, you will find it easy to work this quick design. As a bonus, I’ve included an additional companion design so you can create mini collage tags too.

You don’t have any homework ahead of the retreat, but you"ll want to bring assorted bits and pieces from your stash at home. We ALL have those left over buttons, bits of trims or antique lace that we just cannot part with. And if you are already a scrapbook ‘cropper" or paper-crafter you will likely have plenty of lovely papers, stickers and other embellishments. Bring them along and trade with your friends—be creative! A Stitcher"s Garden will have an assortment of floss colors on hand to allow everyone to select their favorite color combination for this project—so each little collage will definitely be unique!

Here’s a "be sure and bring" list for the class:
printable PDF of class

  • Light and magnification as needed – we are, after all, stitching on 40ct silk gauze

  • 4" – 6" embroidery hoop

  • Embroidery scissors

  • "Paper" scissors – the ones you don"t mind using for things other than your needlework

  • Assorted buttons and charms, scraps of lace, trims, felted wool, etc. – keep them small in scale. The little hornbook is just slightly longer than 3" without the handle.

  • Assorted papers, embellishments – just anything you like

  • And finally, your own unique creativity!
